I find this little chart (hat tip Richard Smith) from ninety9 via Alea (who is the antithesis of a socialist) to be more though-provoking than the entire Wired piece:

Yves must have gone through her back issues to find this Wired article (the article is almost a year old) which I agree is very weak, but there have been many good articles written since that show who is building all the crap we buy, particularly the “This American Life” episode by Mike Daisey:
