Automotive Manufacturing Investments

People wonder if the big three will stay in the United States. They will be around for another ten years doing the assembly part and buying components and assemblies (wire harnesses, etc.) from overseas. And yes there is cost to doing it this way. Once on the dock, they own it. Six weeks on the ocean and sitting through customs, they own it. Coming by rail to Michigan or Ohio, etc. they own it. A lot of overhead here. Even out of Mexico, there is excessive cost. All of which we pay for today.

This article reads like a commercial. It is more so than not. However, GM is investing in facilities in the Midwest which will lock them in for a while. Like I said, this reads much like a commercial. It is. It also has a lot of good information. There is more tan just Parma which I added.

With this new commitment, GM’s total manufacturing investments for 2025 now approach $5.5 billion, underscoring the company’s aggressive commitment to domestic manufacturing and meeting customer demand across its ICE and EV portfolio.

Strengthening U.S. Supply Chain Resiliency & Flexible Manufacturing

The investment in Parma Metal Center is a direct result of GM’s commitment to expand U.S. production capacity and complements efforts to strengthen the company’s domestic supply chain, ensuring that we can continue to deliver high-quality vehicles.

  • Orion Assembly, Orion Township, Michigan: GM will begin production of gas-powered full-size SUVs and light duty pickup trucks at Orion in early 2027 to help meet continued strong demand. As a result, GM’s Factory ZERO in Detroit-Hamtramck, Michigan will be the dedicated assembly location for the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Cadillac ESCALADE IQ, and GMC HUMMER EV pickup and SUV.
  • Fairfax Assembly, Kansas City, Kansas: Fairfax Assembly will support production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox beginning in mid-2027. Sales of the recently redesigned Equinox were up more than 30% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2025. Fairfax remains on track to begin building the 2027 Chevrolet Bolt EV by the end of this year. GM expects to make new future investments in Fairfax for GM’s next generation of affordable EVs.
  • Spring Hill Manufacturing, Spring Hill, Tennessee: GM will add production of the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer at Spring Hill starting in 2027, alongside the Cadillac LYRIQ and VISTIQ EVs, and the Cadillac XT5.

Investing in People: Workforce Development and Training

Our recent commitments aren’t just about machines and materials — they’re about people. GM continues to prioritize workforce development and help ensure our team members have the skills needed for today’s changing manufacturing environment. At Parma Metal Center, we’re equipping our team members with the knowledge and tools they need to work alongside advanced technology and equipment.

GM’s comprehensive approach to workforce development – from continued learning opportunities, investments in STEM/STEAM education and apprenticeship programs – is also helping provide opportunities for tomorrow’s career seekers.

A Vision for American Manufacturing

“Our commitment to Parma Metal Center isn’t just about upgrading equipment—it’s about investing in the people who make it all happen,” said Mike Trevorrow, senior vice president of global manufacturing.

“Our manufacturing teams are the driving force behind GM’s success, and we’re committed to giving them the tools and training they need to excel in today’s advanced manufacturing world. When we invest in our workforce, we’re not only building great vehicles—we’re helping secure the future of American manufacturing.”

Parma Metal Center: Over 75 years of Manufacturing Excellence

Parma Metal Center has the capacity to produce over 100 million parts annually. Its manufacturing capabilities include metal stamping and processes more than 400 tons of steel daily, producing parts for most of GM’s North American-built products.

As I read this, what they are saying they can do is something I would want to know. Capabilities are important to a Buyer.I would go to the facility to see the operation. I worked in them enough to qualify them by sight. The other part is planning, throughput, and delivery.
