Kamala Harris’s economic policy slate more popular than Trump’s – poll
Kind of have to jump around on this one. Both commentaries by Kareem are good. I just happen to like the Nationalism one better.

US elections 2024, The Guardian
SUMMARY: Kamala Harris’s economic policies proved far more popular than Donald Trump’s plans in a blind test of their proposals.
Four of the top five most popular proposals were from the Democratic candidate’s campaign, according to a new Harris Poll conducted exclusively for the Guardian.
The poll showed strong optimism from Democrats about Harris’s presidential candidacy but – once again – highlighted pessimism around the US economy from both sides of the aisle.
Americans surveyed were given a list of 12 policy proposals – six from Harris’s campaign and six from Trump’s. The poll did not say whose campaign the proposals came from.
The most popular proposal was a federal ban on the price-gouging of food and groceries – a Democratic proposal that some leading economists have criticized. Nearly half (44%) of all those polled agreed that it would strengthen the economy.
Harris’s price gouging proposal is designed to help address the top economic issue of respondents: cost of living. A majority of those polled (66%) indicated that the cost of living was one of their biggest economic concerns right now.
Kareem’s Take: This blind poll showed that most people prefer Harris’ economic plans. Of the top 5 chosen, 4 belonged to Harris. Yet, a poll of Americans shows that 43% think Trump is more trustworthy to handle the U.S. economy, versus 41% who think Harris would do a better job.
This is the essence of not using critical thinking: people believe something based on “confirmation bias,” which means they have been culturally trained to believe Republicans are better for the economy and that men are better at business. Yet, this is in direct contradiction to the facts (“Over 400 economists and ex-officials endorse Kamala Harris”). Though Trump has preached that inflation is chronic under Biden, not only is the economy very solid right now, but Trump’s plans will make things worse (“Trump would make America’s inflation crisis worse, 16 Nobel economists warn”).
I love a blind test, like the technical skills portion of The Great British Bake Off, because it’s the only way to remove bias from an opinion. Now we know: most Americans prefer Harris’ economic plan—even if they don’t know it, or won’t admit it.
AB: Guess they do not trust a black well-educated woman. They would rather take a blathering idiot’s opinion. Sigh . . .
Polls often have a hard time reaching the deepest emotional levels that humans operate on. You get asked questions and this puts your analytical thought processes into action. With pricing, the emotions are strong – particularly food pricing. Your mind says that such-and-such future policy sounds optimal. Meanwhile your emotions are saying those prices were way too high and Biden is President (and Harris is VP). Some people resolve this conflict by crediting the rational analytic outlook, and others will go with their emotional state. I noticed that there was a post today of some Kevin Drum material of 10/18, but he posted some interesting thoughts just the day before that was in this general area of conversation. I do not link well – I always screw it up, but it was a 10/17 date. Anyway, not saying Biden/Harris policies drove all this, just that since it was perceived to be pretty harmful on sensitive goods like food, the emotions are strong and long-lasting. So I can readily understand polls showing a Harris-type approach is popular and also Trump leading Harris on economic issues.
That should be I do not link well.
@Eric,
Emotion over reason is the path to fascism. That concerns me. YMMV.
Eric:
And Biden and Harris policy did drive inflation but not in the same purposeful manner the business increases in pricing drove inflation on things such as food, energy, etc. for which there is no reason to implement such increases other than the advantage of a national catastrophe. No Schooner Tunas out there, just rent taker. Companies decreasing the size of packaging, boldly increasing prices for the same size or the smaller packages. The results of which helped to cause unnecessary inflation.
Ok, so what if Biden had not given people out of work extra funding and more if they had children, or expanded ACA healthcare by lowering the limits for ACA healthcare for those under 200% FPL partially for 250% FPL, and increased the maximum beyond 500% FPL All inflationary . . .
Just like 2008, companies took advantage of the economic scenario, and the orange creep uses this to his advantage. Are you that blind? The old man Biden saved your butt while trump, others, and corporations took advantage of the economic catastrophe to line their personal pockets with bonuses resulting from increases profits.
Your not saying Biden/Harris did not drive all of the inflation is not a bromide for what occurred. If Biden did not do what they did during a deadly pandemic, you more than likely as well as others here today would not be here claiming other than the reality of what did happen.
You need to start thinking about the reality of what did happen. And the closest example is 2008 without a pandemic. You and others need to place your emotions where it belongs which is with Republican politicians and corporations who were capitalizing on an economic occurrence.
I will not explain this again to you . . .
Bill, safe to say you are wrong on this one. Biden said inflation was 9% when he came into office, 9%.
