On Climate Change and migration
Climate Migration is Reshaping The Future
… The Republicans said their new proposal would be aligned with what they discussed with Biden in their first Oval Office meeting almost two weeks ago.“We are anxious to have a bipartisan agreement,” said Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., who is leading the group of GOP negotiators.A GOP aide who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private talks said the price tag would be $1 trillion over eight years, paid for by tapping funds that have been allocated as part of COVID-19 relief but not yet spent. The aide said about $700 billion remains in unspent virus aid.Psaki declined to comment on the forthcoming GOP proposal, but Democrats on Capitol Hill were quick to rebuff dipping into coronavirus relief funds, particularly money that had been sent to the states and local governments that now seems less urgent as some jurisdictions reported better-than-expected balance sheets. The White House is expecting the Republican counteroffer by Thursday and doesn’t want to prejudge what’s in there. But a GOP plan to tap into rescue funds, aides believe, doesn’t work because much of that money has already been exhausted, and it could also diminish the COVID-19 response. …GOP senators ready $1t infrastructure counteroffer to Biden https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/05/26/business/gop-senators-ready-1t-infrastructure-counteroffer-biden/?event=event25
Biden had dropped his $2.3 trillion opening bid to $1.7 trillion, and Republicans had nudged their initial $568 billion offer up by about $50 billion late last week, but talks teetered as both sides complained the movement was insufficient. The Republicans have uniformly rejected Biden’s plan to pay for the investments by raising the corporate tax rate, from 21% to 28%. Instead, the GOP senators want to shift unspent COVID-19 relief funds to infrastructure, which may be a nonstarter for Democrats. Republicans also want to rely on gas taxes, tolls and other fees charged to drivers to pay for the highways and other infrastructure. …

The Apple Tax Is Rotten https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/26/opinion/apple-app-store-fortnite-lawsuit.html?smid=tw-share
… the Apple tax — the billions of dollars a year that Apple collects from large swaths of the technology industry for the privilege of offering paid apps and in-app purchases to iPhone and iPad users. Once, in the early days of the iPhone, Apple’s 30 percent fee on app purchases, and its restrictive rules, could be defended on the grounds of its great innovation in the mobile market. …
(The ‘Apple tax’ is absolutely great for investors, in that it insures terrific revenues for Apple corp.)
This man needs to be court-martialed and kicked out of the military.”Army Chaplain Running for Congress Denies that Biden is President, Vows to “Take on AOC”Appearing on the GunFreedomRadio podcast, 26-year-old Army Reserve chaplain Alex Stovall, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Congress from Arizona, made his opinion of Joe Biden and the legitimacy of the 2020 election very clear, saying:’ “We saw the inauguration of this well, I don’t think he’s President but whoever you would call this sleepy guy in office”Article 88, part of Title 10 of the U.S. Code, also known as the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) addresses “Contempt toward officials,” stating (emphasis added):
“Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Homeland Security, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.”
But, back to the matter at hand, Stovall is a U.S. military officer who is flagrantly violating military regulations to further his political ambition to join the ranks of Marjorie Taylor Greene, Lauren Boebert, and Matt Gaetz (if he’s still in Congress and not in jail) in 2022.MRFF, as it similarly and successfully did when failed Georgia Senate candidate and chaplain Doug Collins was similarly violating the same regulations in his 2020 Georgia primary ads, will be taking action to stop this anti-American chaplain/model/actor/financial advisor from illegally using his military rank and position to advertise his candidacy and his contempt for America.”https://www.dailykos.com/st…
Mitt Romney reminisces about Ted Kennedy as he accepts Profile in Courage award https://www.bostonglobe.com/2021/05/26/metro/mitt-romney-reminisces-about-ted-kennedy-he-accepts-profile-courage-award/?event=event25
Mitt Romney should best be remembered as the originator of RomneyCare which soon evolved into ObamaCare – aka ACA – which most Americans much appreciate, and so he receives a Profile in Courage award – also deserved for standing up to Don Trump at crucial moments, not unlike John McCain.
The Biden Justice Department appears to be making a serious mistake by trying to keep secret a Trump-era document about former Attorney General William P. Barr’s decision to clear his boss, former President Donald Trump, of obstructing justice. The American people have a right to see the memo. Then they can decide whether Mr. Barr used his power as the nation’s chief law enforcement officer as a shield to protect the president. This month, Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.S. District Court in Washington ordered it released. Were this an ordinary criminal case, her order would represent a remarkable intrusion into prosecutorial secrecy, and I would have appealed when I was acting solicitor general. But the document is anything but ordinary. It concerns attempts at the highest levels of government to shield the attorney general’s boss from criminal liability. It is, in essence, the people’s memo, and with its appeal, the Justice Department is attempting to hide it from public scrutiny. …
The Public Deserves to See This Legal Memo About Donald Trump https://www.nytimes.com/2021/05/26/opinion/trump-barr-obstruction-justice-doj.html?smid=tw-share
Fred, We need to allow the Courts to make this decision. The last thing we need is another AG who takes his orders from politicians.
Judge Amy Berman Jackson of the U.S. District Court in Washington ordered it released.
“It is time for the public to see (the memorandum) too.”
Should I be happy or sad that ordinary Joe is shaping up to be the best POTUS of my lifetime? Of course most liberals think that was LBJ, but when judged according to how well the Great Society held up against time, then LBJ was no FDR, not even close.
Biden’s Budget Would Push Federal Spending and Debt to Record Highs President Biden’s first budget request proposes spending $6 trillion, documents obtained by The New York Times show.It would be the highest level of sustained spending since World War II, driven by Mr. Biden’s agenda to upgrade infrastructure and expand the social safety net.
Fred, District Courts are not the final arbiter.
Going forward, us Democrats may be in trouble if every legal decision has to go to the Supreme Court. Particularly this one, where Biden would seem to be protecting Don Trump the Former President.
Everybody understands that the final decision about all law goes to the Supreme Court. Many of us knew this in 2016, yet we were ignored as being reactionary by advocating voting for the pantsuits person in order to save the Supreme Court.
