    I am totally surprised how low the number is for those who want to cut defense vs increase it.

    Daniel B., I think people get “support the troops”, the VA, and the Defense Dept mixed up. (Some people want them to be confused.)

    Also, the DOD is so broadly based that a cut will hurt someone. Without knowing it is the other guy’s district people are afraid of cuts.

    I’m fascinated by the states with deficit hawk constituencies and politicians pull a 180 when it comes to defense spending because their state benefits from it–such as NH with Kelly Ayotte and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. In that sense, I you have a demographic of folks who decry gov’t spending except for defense.
