Presimetrics in Parade Magazine

For a long time, I knew the date that Presimetrics, the book I wrote with Michael Kanell, was going to be released – August 11. The date was recently pushed back later in the month. But, the other day some interesting news came up…
Parade Magazine – the Sunday news magazine – will have a quiz based on the book in their Intelligence Report column on August 8th. Parade is distributed with more than 400 newspapers and has a circulation of over 32 million, the largest in the U.S. I believe they will also set up an on-line Q&A with Michael Kanell and I where readers can write in with what is on their mind.
Obviously, all of us involved in the book are very excited by this unexpected development. Black Dog & Leventhal, our publisher, is naturally moving up the release date so I believe the book is now expected to ship at the end of this month.
FWIW, I’m not that good at self-promotion and tooting my own horn, but I think our book can make a contribution to the discourse. Not only do we make a systematic effort to point out graphically what happened across a wide range of issues (and why), we emphasize time and again the importance of looking at information in an easy, intuitive, and methodical way. We think these are things that can have a big effect on society as a whole. If you believe in our approach, please help us get the word out!

The people who disagree with you should get a free copy…..If we don’t not believe in the depth of your analysis as respesented by your posts…..why would we buy a copy?

Uhhmm, if I don’t know what the book is about, and haven’t had an opportunity to read it, so how can I in good conscience promote it? I suspect I will agree with its conclusions–Krugman pretty much summed up the big picture with a few graphs.
But more importantly, and critically, all spending bills have to originate in the House. That fact takes a big bite out of assigning responsibility to the Presidency. I would love to see such an analysis based on control of the House.
Of course, nowadays, the illusionary threat of a Senate filibuster changes the whole equation. If there is one thing I am most angry about with current politics, it is the Democrat’s refusal to really permit the filibuster to proceed. I would have loved to see the Repugnicans filibuster on unemployment extensions. Such a Spectacle would have guaranteed a Democratic landslide. Are these guys so dumb as not to force such an embarrassing confrontation?

Not sure when the book ships. Probably end of this month. (The Parade thing made a hash out of the publisher’s original plans. Its a good problem to have, of coruse.)

I think the book will back up some of what Krugman writes.

As to the filibuster, etc., the guy in the Oval Office has to deal with Congress. Sure, its easier with a friendly Congress, but that’s doesn’t mean success (see GW). Frankly, Obama has played the role of a ninny when it comes to Congress. I have a hard time imagining LBJ, even if he had to face a majority from the other party, being as much of a wall-flower. At this point in his presidency he’d have Boehner’s testicles sitting in a jar on his desk, figuratively speaking of course. Now, that doesn’t mean LBJ is the President to emulate, merely that part of the job is dealing with Congress.
