Gutting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB)

Each week we send more than 50,000 complaints about financial products and services to companies for response. If another agency would be better able to assist, we’ll send it to them and let you (the consumer) know. Most companies respond within 15 days.

The CFPB formally began operation on July 21, 2011 and has been logging consumer complaints since then. Over 4 million complaints were logged since then. Some legislators have complained the data is harmful to the businesses if the complaints are made public. Well, that is kind of the point to make the public aware of poor business practices. Yes?

January 07, 2025, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) finalized a rule removing an estimated $49 billion in medical bills from the credit reports of about 15 million Americans. The CFPB’s action will ban the inclusion of medical bills on credit reports used by lenders and prohibit lenders from using medical information in their lending decisions.

On February 1, 2025, CFPB Director Rohit Chopra was fired by President Donald Trump. Replacing Rohit was the deputy director Zixta Martinez acting. Zita was replaced on February 3rd by a Trump’s Secretary of the Treasury. Not much of a surprise there.
