Crunch your own numbers! You do the math
    !

assume for a moment that the total mass of Earth is
    5.97237×10^24 kg (1.31668×10^25 lb)
    !
then assume that one’s joule is equal to 2.78×10−7 kW⋅h( kilowatt-hours ), equal to 2.390×10−4 kilocalories (thermochemical)
    !
then tell me how many joules of energy it would require to raise the temperature of the Earth by one degree Kelvin
    !
then tell me how many kilowatt hours would be required raise the temperature of the Earth by one degree Kelvin
    !
then assume that total solar irradiance (TSI) – the amount of solar radiation received at the top of Earth’s atmosphere is 1.365 kilowatts per square meter (kW/m²)
    ”
then assume that the Earth’s surface measures 196.9 million mi²
    !
then tell me how long required for the sun to warm up the Earth by one degree Kelvin, assuming that all of the sun’s rays are absorbed by the Earth but none of them are reflected back into the cold universe
    !
    how many years
    ?
Then tell me if you are worried about global warming
    !

    Hey Dan:

Thank you and have a good Thanksgiving. Everything is set with me. I just have to wait for the first infusion in two weeks. Sleepy and tired as all get out.

Justin lots of assumptions – but you are not in doing the relevant calculation. We live in the atmosphere. And what if the earth is still being heated from the inside out? The earth is not a constant temperature from the inside to the outside that alone should give you pause.

I want you to be well, and will be thinking of you and wishing that.

      Anne:

I will be fine. Third time around and I usually tell the doctors what to expect. Each time a little different and this time extremely tired. Thank you for your good wishes. Much appreciated. Have a safe holiday Anne. This holiday, we are all endangered, not just I.

    @Justin,
    “one degree Kelvin” is INCORRECT.
    Just Kelvins, no degree.

P.S. Your calculations ignore the hot core of the Earth.

i get extremely annoyed with people who say “just do the math,” but don’t bother with the facts.

i have taken to making an idiosyncratic distinction between “math” and arithmetic. arithmetic is what you do in grade school… meaningless addition, subtraction… and even factoring and calculus. math means studying problems, with the aid of arithmetic, until you understand them at least well enough to say something useful about them.

people who say “do the math” generally don’t know what they are talking about, except when they are lying for political gain.

Anne said it better than I have been able to.

    Dan

and also to you. for what it is worth, I was shocked and disturbed yesterday to find myself visiting a loved one with no mask and not much distancing. habit and affection overwhelmed knowledge (assumed) and caution. if it can happen to me, i need to be more understanding of the 73 million misled.

There are many people who can say things far better than I and to which I struggle with from time to time. I wish we could start the treatment which will make me feel better for sure. I had a false positive and they want to redo the test to make sure.

      I am not going anywhere.

It takes the sun about one hour to warm my portion of the earth one degree centigrade. fortunately it does not have to warm the entire earth.

and unfortunate that it only takes about a few decades, with carbon dioxide heat trapping, to warm the biosphere about that one degree.

and really unfortunate that so many life forms are really sensitive to that one degree.

    hot core of the Earth.
    ”
    ~~davebarnes~

Have you ever noticed that when you drive suddenly up hill your vehicle tends to slow down. but when suddenly there’s a drop-off so that you suddenly drive down hill, the vehicle speeds up. Do you see how this works? it is potential energy being converted to kinetic energy. that is exactly what happens to molecules. a stratospheric molecule seldom falls far, but when it does fall all the way to sea level it is going much faster at the bottom of troposphere. By definition, molecular motion is heat and level of molecular motion is temperature. This means that there is a temperature gradient between high vs low altitude. Earth is about 290 Kelvin at the Earths surface but over 8000 Kelvin at Earths center. Because of gravity, the temperature gradient remains the same during steady state.

In other words the hot core of the earth is not heating the surface. it is in balance with the surface temperature. molecules at the center have more kinetic energy, but molecules at the surface have more potential energy there is no conversion of energy to mass or mass to energy.
