$1 trillion to be spent on direct hiring…that’s the ticket!
With all this stalemate posturing in Washington, today Chris Hayes has come up with the best idea I have heard yet to move the players. And, in my opinion actually solve our economic depression.
One trillion dollars to be spent on direct hiring by the government along with debt forgiveness. A solution right out of the New Deal program. Unfortunately for Chris, Obama does not have the language within his vocabulary to recognize such an approach and thus in Obama’s own words: “…put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it.”
In fact, not only does he not have the language within his vocabulary to recognize a solution from history, he thinks the 60’s and 70’s were full of excesses (while noting Kennedy moved the nation in a new direction…right into the excesses of the 60’s?)*
Do you think anyone who remembers what it meant to be a leader in the Democratic Party was watching?
*“I do think that, for example, the 1980 election was different. I think Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that, you know, Richard Nixon did not and in a way that Bill Clinton did not.”
“He put us on a fundamentally different path because the country was ready for it. I think they felt like, you know, with all the excesses of the 60s and the 70s, and government had grown and grown, but there wasn’t much sense of accountability in terms of how it was operating. I think people just tapped into — he tapped into what people were already feeling, which was, we want clarity, we want optimism, we want a return to that sense of dynamism and entrepreneurship that had been missing.”
Don’t get me going on the people wanting “clarity” (security state that even the congress can’t get info on) and “optimism” (the audacity!).
Daniel, please, get yourself ‘going’ on that. We need to hear it. The WH people think he’s as good as FDR! Tell us what you think, because it’s probably what a lot of us think also.
Unfortunately it seems both parties have bought into austerity for different reasons, just as they have in Europe. The Republicans simply do not get it, and the Democrats are/were so hung up on tax increases for the rich that we have a bad bargain in effect.
The problem is we simply do not have a deficit problem, unless we see inflation. We need lower taxes at the Federal level, and more deficit spending.
well, i would agree mostly.
i don’t have any objection to tax increases on the rich at this time “as long as the deficit is a political factor.”
in other words, shut up about the deficit or we are going to raise your taxes.
i don’t think this would hurt the economy because the people paying the tax would be the people who are currently not spending or investing the money that would be taxed and spent or invested by the government.
this is not always true. but we have had 30 years or more of spending without taxing and we may have reached the limit of what that kind of deficit spending can accomplish.
in any case, direct spending by the government to create real jobs… or loans to private business to create real jobs… is the answer to the “recession.”
but apparently we need the recession and the deficit to “force” them to cut Social Security which is what they really want to do. both the R’s and the O’s.
But Coberly,
Can’t you just see the heads bursting if Obama came out today with a statement something like:
So, you don’t like my plan to give you the opening to gut SS and MC then try this. Tomorrow I will submit a bill that will take $1trillion and divid it 50/50 (want to be balanced) of which half will immediately be spent on buying up non corporate, non-business, personal and student debt. The other half will immediately be released to hire all those state and federal employees layed off since my first term began and to hire all those each department say are necessary to do the job properly especially regulatory jobs.
Now, let’s talk because tomorrow I start touring the nation on this plan.
Becker
I’d take it.
but the trouble is (may be) that when someone starts talking about “printing money” everyone goes crazy… just like when they talk about taxing the rich to pay for SS..
you gotta be careful how you sell this.
and i’m fairly sure that most of that Trillion would have to be “paid for”.
Becker
“So, you don’t like my plan to give you the opening to gut SS and MC then try this..”
Obama would never say this, “gut” sounds too much like “slash.”
On the other hand if you said “cut the heart out of SS” you’d be describing what he is planning to do, even if not saying so. It’s more of a “surgical strike.”
OR… since Obama is so fond of torture… “give SS the death of a thousand cuts..”
