let them try to buy health insurance in the individual market
Health care thought for a cold day:
If members of Congress feel so strongly about not doing anything about health care costs, perhaps we should stop providing them with health insurance. Let’s credit their pay for the amount that has been paid by the taxpayers, and let them try to buy health insurance in the individual market. (My bet is that they all would be denied).
Update: The link did not register… NYT opinion here
Why would you think that an insurance company would make a decision about providing coverage to a member of Congress based on the same cost/benefit considerations applicable to a private individual? My bet is not a single one would be denied.

It’ll be a cold day…
The insurance schills will provide health coverage gratis, professional courtesy, bribery.
They already get their weekly bag from K Street.
There is a huge memory lapse, they pick up the Declaration of Independence at liberty and pursuit of property.
The equality thingy was only to get the rubes to join the fight.

aren’t most of them millionaires?
tstockman, ilsm, davidsanger: i agree. however, it would be a start . . .
You can get coverage if you apply soon after you lose coverage and at reasonable rates. If you wait, you will not get reasonable rates for the catastrophic coverage you are eligible to receive. Most likely it will be with the insurance company you just left
When the ruling class is insulated from the challenges of the ruled, there is little motivation for ameliorating those challenges.
OOps
They are bought, they are wealthy, I am for cutting all their compensations down by maybe one third. The lobbyists will make up for it anyway. Getting paid for by lobbyists anyway, they may even work for nothing, the pay is good either way.
