So McCarthy has promised the nihilists that they can decide what they would seek to demand in return for not destroying the world economy on the debt ceiling and it looks like that will get the deal done. No way that I equate the GOP — burn it all down— with the Dems, but I am going to be done with the Dems if social security and Medicare get cut because they refused to deal with it in the 117th Congress and their apparent failure to offer McCarthy— or some other Republican Liz Cheney? — the votes to become Speaker if they just agreed to a clean debt ceiling raise. It was the same story with abortion. Democrats talk a good game for fundraising and soliciting votes, but at the end of the day they do not fight for the country— only their re election just like the GOP. They are just as complicit in the death of the Republic.
What do you expect out of Cheney? “Ms. Cheney overwhelmingly lost in the Republican primary in August to her Trump-backed opponent, Harriet Hageman, who was elected on Tuesday to Wyoming’s lone House seat with nearly 70 percent of the vote.”
I would expect that she could have gotten 6 Republicans to vote for her if the Dem caucus would have voted for her. She is very conservative but does believe in the Constitution and governance as do a number of the GOP. McCarthy sold his soul to folks who just want to burn it all down and we are going to be facing a real crisis on the debt ceiling in the next 12 months. I do not care about government shutdowns— the GOP will get punished for that and the damage is not lasting. If the GOP causes a default however or blackmails the Dems into phasing out social security and Medicare to avoid default, there is really going to be hell to pay.
One would hope that Cheney could get 6 GOP Reps to vote for her, but prob’ly not.
The Dems were too tied up in showing solidarity for Jeffries to go that way it seems.
Also, maybe too disturbing for both parties to condone having a Dem Speaker for a GOP-controlled House. One might recall the difficult times experienced in the early USA when it was possible to have a Dem VP (Jefferson) with a Federalist President.
The 13th ballot seemed to be a dress rehearsal for the 14th & final ballot. What happened…
Sufficient votes for a McCarthy victory were obtained (214 on the 14th), if enough GOP members would vote present on the next ballot. All that would be necessary would be for 8 anti-Kevin votes to change. It did not work out that way: 2 for McCarthy; 2 each for Biggs & for Jordan; 2 voted present (Gaetz & Bobert), bringing his total to 216. 217 would have been a majority of the votes cast. One short.
In the end, McCarthy appeared to personally blame Gaetz for his defeat (words were exchanged.) The House was going to adjourn; by voice vote, it was decided NOT to do so. They seem to be proceeding into a 15th ballot.
McCarthy got enough votes (214) on the 13th ballot to win, more than Jeffries but not a majority of the votes cast. Not enough present votes to sufficiently reduce the majority requirement. It looked like a dress rehearsal. It did not work out that way. On the 14th ballot too many anti-Kevin votes were still cast. Not enough present votes were cast. McCarthy got 216 votes. He needed 217.
Voting underway on the 15th ballot. More present votes have been cast. If McCarthy again gets 216 votes (or more), he will win the Speakership, or what’s left of it.

Looks like it ended up the way it was supposed to have been on the 14th ballot.
216 for McCarthy, 212 for Jeffries, and 6 present to bring down the majority requirement.
