Unprepared
Preparing for old age needs to start when you’re young. Life habits of regular exercise, healthy diet, regular medical and dental check-ups, challenging mental activity and healthy social life. The goal is a long healthspan, not just a long lifespan.
Financial planning is also important. Wealth and health are statistically correlated.
“The wealthiest older Americans can expect an extra nine years of life, on average, compared to the poorest, a team of Massachusetts researchers concluded in a new report. And that wealth and death gap will only widen, the researchers say, with nearly a trillion dollars in federal cuts to the nation’s health care system coming in the next decade.
“At the same time, another Massachusetts team has found that most Americans are ill prepared for their senior years, with many not planning for the type of care, housing, finances, and health services they are likely to need as they age in this rapidly changing landscape.”

Having been blessed/cursed with longevity ~ father’s sister is 95; mother 90, g-mother lived to 95 and g-g-father 105 ~ I kinda’ sorta’ dread the future, but put my best foot forward for three mile walks with probably unreasonable numbers of pushups, pullups and walking jacks two or three times a week. I’m in good shape, younger than I feel
I don’t necessarily mind the idea of getting that old as getting that old and being all … fouled up
Joel:
Welcome to a potential blowing up of America. For one issue, getting healthcare is difficult enough with the ACA. It is somewhat easier with Medicare and a bit harder with Medicaid. On Medicaid, the politicians seem to believe people are scamming while they enjoy better care and a pension after so many years in the government. I believe you know all of this anyway and I am preaching to the preachers.
If you can do so, everything you said is correct. If you can not do so due to financial issues, one may be less likely to thrive like you or I did. And the government driven by political interests appear to believe many of us are loafing so to speak. I suspect for those in such a predicament, their suspender straps broke decades ago.
I do not know how I could tell someone to prepare for getting old when the struggle is now. My brothers, sister and I were fortunate as we evolved from parents with one having a high school education and the other grade school. We all graduated from college and three of us have advanced degrees. VA benefits helped as well as scholarships and some financial aid.
I help where I can and advise the ones in grade school and high school to go as far as they can in acquiring an education.
