Violent Crime in D.C. Hits 30 Year Low
Be Careful What You Wish For. More stories by the Tr__p administration in an effort to distract from himself, his administration and Republicans.
WASHINGTON – Total violent crime for 2024 in the District of Columbia is down 35% from 2023 and is the lowest it has been in over 30 years, according to data collected by the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and announced by United States Attorney Matthew M. Graves.
In 2024, groups like the Chamber of Commerce pushed the “Secure D.C.” bill in the city council, which expanded pre-trial detention, weakened restrictions on chokeholds, and limited public access to police disciplinary records.
At the time, business groups and corporations lauded these changes as necessary to fight the post-pandemic crime spike D.C. was experiencing.”
Except there was no spike in crime. It was a blatant lie made to justify unneeded actions distracting people from the real issues with the Tr__p administration and REpublicans.

Crime rates in D.C. had fallen precipitously, to a 30-year low over the course of 2024. As a press release from the U.S. attorney’s office released on January 3, 2025 stated: “homicides are down 32%; robberies are down 39%; armed carjackings are down 53%; assaults with a dangerous weapon are down 27% when compared with 2023 levels.”
Nevertheless, as Trump sends federal troops into D.C., many in the corporate world are still cheering.
Another made up story to distract from the real issues with the Tr__p administration and Republicans.

Maybe it’s a distraction but it seems to be working to distract. As an example, it ought to have been pretty easy for Senator Schumer to not feed the media storm over this if Trump’s goal was distract from problems. Even here at AB, it’s another shiny object to chase after. This effort will likely work out okay for Trump. DC isn’t that big. There are abundant resources to deploy. Crime will recede in the district, even if it’s a reaction to simply wait out the 30 day “emergency” by the more calculating of the district’s miscreants. Or take the show on the road to nearby parts of Maryland and Virginia. Late in the 30 day period I expected you’ll be hearing from lots of DC residents not named Schumer that they are living with less anxiety. There will be less anxiety. Sustainable? Not really. A template for other cities? No, DC is the only federal district. But I question the sense of people who see this as a distraction deciding to amplify the distraction. Just wait him out and evaluate an extension if he proposes one. The judgment of effectiveness is not likely to made on prior trends in stats, but on anxiety of residents. A bit analogous to the efforts to convince people in 2024 that they should not be so upset over grocery prices because of A, B and C reasons. ‘See? This shows you should not have been as nervous about crime as you seem to have been. What are you, uneducated or something?’ Trump has demonstrated inordinate skill at exploiting stuff just like that.
I remember how it was walking the streets in DC 30 years ago. It was safe at night, women walking alone with no problems in most areas. Now, a completely different situation. No one I know would dare walking ANYWHERE in DC at night. Sure “reported” crime statistics are down, and I won’t comment on the truthfulness of these statistics, but you’re taking your life in your hands walking around DC day or night. Here you have juveniles committing adult crimes with no consequences. Most carjacking done by 14 to 17 year olds are aided by 70% of these kids having a gun to take your car away. Very weak laws enacted by the DC council.
I have been to DC a number of times, sometimes by myself on business and sometimes with my family including running the Marine Corps Marathon with Oprah–not really with her but she ran the same marathon I did in pouring rain. Had two sets of friends who lived in the District. Never had an issue with crime at all. Some of the visits were about 30 years ago, some were before that. The odd thing is that African Americans made up a much higher percentage of the population 30 years ago than they do today. If what you say is true Steve, it must be all those white MAGA types who have made DC unsafe–just ask the Capitol Police who were injured and died because of the criminals that Trump pardoned.
@Terry,
We lived and worked in St. Louis from 1982 to 2022. During most of that time, St. Louis was the #1 “most dangerous” city in the US. We were never victims of crime during that entire 40 years. My wife and I knew hundreds of people during that time, and none were homicide victims. Of course, I read about killings in the paper, but if you read past the headlines, you learned that it was usually about drug dealing or domestic violence.
Most homicide victims knew their assailant. Not to blame the victims, but if you don’t deal in drugs and don’t own a firearm or live with someone who does, your chances of being killed were much lower than the statistics suggest. If you were injured or killed by a stranger in St. Louis, that stranger was most likely wielding a steering wheel.
In South Korea, they impeached a president who imposed martial law which is what Trump is trying to do in DC. Except to check for drunk driving and near the border–100 miles– checkpoints are unconstitutional or at least have been –who knows with the clowns making up a majority of SCOTUS–but they have set them up in DC. Now I know that DC is subject to Federal control, but the last I checked the Constitution applies to the Federal government.
@Terry,
I’m sure the Roberts “original intent” SCOTUS will discover a legal fig leaf for this.
While you can find plenty of bleating and pearl clutching about DC crime, there are several large American cities with as high or higher rates of violent crime. Make no mistake: Trump is going after a city with a Black mayor. This invasion and military occupation isn’t about crime and it won’t solve the crime problem. He thinks it will help solve his Epstein problem, though. That’s what this is really about. We’ll see how many people are duped by Trump’s propaganda.
Joel:
I see what he Tr__p doing. I started to look for some detail on how bad Washington is compared to other cities. Not so bad if we examine the numbers against other cities. Larger, same size, and smaller . . . I could pick others to also show a comparison. The chart gets to cluttered if I add more.
I agree with your comment on going after a Black Mayor.
There’s not a single distraction Trump has deployed that wasn’t completely effective. He is the master at making people talk about him. Having been around the NY media for decades he knows all to well that bad publicity is good publicity and has used it to his advantage to manipulate the media into constantly talking about him. Had it not been for the media, Trump would’ve disappeared a long time ago. But he knew they were very easily manipulated into giving him free press. It’s estimated in his first election campaign he received $ 6 billion in free press. With every attack from the media, smear campaign and total attempt to annihilate him, yes he gains people that hate him but he also gains supporters. He knows all he has to do is put out a stupid tweet and he’ll be talked about for days. The media is what truly made him into what he is today. I just can’t for the life of me understand how they keep falling for it. Everyone knows the best way to beat a bully is to ignore them and the best way to keep them relevant is to keep giving them the attention they crave. As a Trump voter, I whole heartedly thank everyone in the media for turning this man into real life folk hero and where anyone else would’ve faded away a long time ago, this man was elected President of the United States not once but twice.
@Matt,
LOL!
This man was *appointed* President of the United States by the electoral college not once but twice. He *lost* the popular vote twice. His poll numbers today are way underwater, currently the lowest in his second term, according to Nate Silver’s data.
He’s the only president to be impeached twice. He’s the only convicted felon to serve as POTUS. But he certainly has fooled the rubes.
