Versatility of conviction
The tariffs were always about extortion, soliciting bribes. They were never about helping the economy, balancing the budget, trade deficits or reducing taxes.
“After multiple White House aides insisted that the new tariffs were not a negotiation, Trump said he would be open to negotiating with other countries about the duties.
“Trump said he would be open to tariff talks with other counties if they offer something phenomenal, Reuters reported him saying on Air Force One.
“Top trade aide Peter Navarro told CNBC less than an hour earlier that the sweeping tariffs are “not a negotiation.”
If Navarro possessed a molecule of dignity, he’d be embarrassed. But embarrassing his MAGA minions is a feature, not a bug, for Trump.

Rachel Maddow explains where Trump got tariffs in his head from his, “Top trade aide Peter Navarro…” Will it take another 1K-2K drop in the Dow to bring Republican’s to their senses? We only have to wait until Monday to find out.
Rachel Maddow: Trump crashed the world’s markets based on the advice of a fictional economist.
The United States has imposed a 50% tariff on Lesotho which should straighten out all our problems soon.
As a retired guy, I can tell you that taking a 15% hit on my net worth since Trump took office is going to have a profound effect on my spending and I suspect that I am not alone. I anticipate a fall off in demand like 1929 and can only hope that the Dems have another FDR waiting in the wings.
Terrance”
It is “probably” only temporary. Unless you believe the big guys will go along with trump when their funds decrease in value. We were not the only ones to get a drop in value.
@Bill,
Yeah, the title of the post gives that away. It’s not about the commitment to tariffs as a replacement to income taxes, it’s about using tariffs as a stick to control and subordinate the market. So far, the only businessman to publicly criticize Trump’s tariffs is Elon, and his tenure at DOGE is about to end.
Sigh . . .
“Not for me and only for thee.”
If there is one lesson which should be learned, it would be the application of such an act, law, etc. to everyone. Then hear the squealing. Elon needs to go back to South Africa. We have had enough of the political and monetarily privileged Elon.
