A state legislator in Illinois has gone to court to upend the governor’s emergency powers to impose a lock down on the basis that the law only allows an emergency declaration to last for 30 days.

No need for Governor Pritzker to extend emergency powers — just declare a new emergency; start all over. The legislature could not possibly have intended that the governor could only declare one emergency every four years. But it would make complete sense to require a new look at the need for such extraordinary powers every 30 days — instead of just letting them run on forever, unminded.

Michael Moore takes a dive, or simply forgot how to do a documentary. Or maybe a little bit of both.

“Michael Moore produced a film about climate change that’s a gift to Big Oil

Planet of the Humans deceives viewers about clean energy and climate activists.

Last week marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. To celebrate the occasion, filmmaker Michael Moore dropped a new movie he produced, Planet of the Humans. In less than a week, it has racked up over 3 million views on YouTube.

But the film, directed by Jeff Gibbs, a long-time Moore collaborator, is not the climate message we’ve all been waiting for — it’s a nihilistic take, riddled with errors about clean energy and climate activism. With very little evidence, it claims that renewables are disastrous and that environmental groups are corrupt.

What’s more, it has nothing to say about fossil fuel corporations, who have pushed climate denial and blocked progress on climate policy for decades. Given the film’s loose relationship to facts, I’m not even sure it should be classified as a documentary.

There are real tradeoffs in the clean energy transition. As a scholar, I’ve done my fair share of research and writing on those exact issues over the past decade. Renewables have downsides. As do biomass, nuclear, hydropower, batteries, and transmission. There is no perfect solution to our energy challenges.

But this film does not grapple with these thorny questions; it peddles falsehoods. Films for Action, an online library of free progressive films, agrees with me. It briefly pulled the movie from its site, after documentary filmmaker Josh Fox wrote an open letter, co-signed by climate scientists and energy experts. ”

They f!cked the world and now they are taking advantage of it.

Horrible leadership and an emperor for life. The world should really pay attention to this.

“The coronavirus pandemic that rages across the globe is a fire China helped light. And now, while Beijing grasps a fire hose with two hands, it’s also planting a boot on the world’s neck.

The Chinese government spent weeks denying and downplaying the severity of its growing coronavirus outbreak that eventually spread to the rest of the world. That obfuscation cost nations crucial time in preparing for and potentially curbing the damage of Covid-19. Some experts Vox spoke with believe President Xi Jinping’s regime should be held accountable for the more than 3 million infections and 200,000 deaths that have taken place worldwide.

But China isn’t letting the crisis go to waste. Instead of looking to make amends, Beijing is taking advantage of the chaos to pursue its long-term foreign policy goals more aggressively.

“When it sees opportunities, China moves to exploit them,” said Bonnie Glaser, director of the China Power Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies think tank in Washington, DC. “And we are in a moment where the Chinese definitely see opportunities.”

China has capitalized on the world’s distraction to claim sovereignty over disputed islands in the South China Sea, intimidate Taiwan, and assert more authority over Hong Kong in an attempt to quash the pro-democracy movement there.

It’s taken advantage of vulnerable countries in Africa that are struggling to cope with the coronavirus and its economic impact by offering much-needed debt relief — but only if those countries provide lucrative national assets as collateral.”

I just got back from a round trip from Chicago to Philadelphia. Unfortunately my mother-in-law passed away (not the corona) and needed to spend four days arranging for the burial and graveside services and attend.

Some hotels along the way were closed, some were open. None of them were serving any food. Stayed at an extended stay america (far from my first choice) while in Phila in order to have a kitchenette, which saved us from a constant fast food diet.

Even then it was a horror for food on the road. I never eat fast food, but I am amazed how bad some of it is. Burger King is the worst, and that is saying something.

Nice part was I was able to get some good Italian bread while in Phila at my favorite Italian Deli, Sam’s in WIllow Grove. Bread is to die for. And something I have not found in Chicago despite two days in the city visiting 8 of the Top 10 ranked Italian bakeries.

Scary Chicago has no good Italian bread. I got far, far better in Phoenix, and certainly in Phila.

      EM:

My wife and I are half Italian and she makes her own sauce/gravy. We stocked up on this besides stuffed shells, Lasagna, and the regular spaghettis. You do not like the crusty Gonnella bread?

To call them crusty is being too kind.

Real Italian bread is served in a paper bag, not some piece of plastic (though now the plastic is a health requirement).

I found Gonnella to be glorified Wonder Bread. Small step up from Kroger’s.

    Run,

Im experience buying bread in Phila, NY and Phoenix, all the best bread comes out of a 600 degree brick oven,

      EM:

It is there, you just have top look for it in the city. We had no problem finding it on the north side right around Damen and Foster. I grew up in Chicago so for me it is easier. Gonnella did come in a paper bag.

They might have changed. Their website contains not a single outlet.

    https://www.gonnella.com/industries/retailers/deli/

And this lineup is not something I am interested in.

I will ask my son in Park Ridge. There are some places in Andersonville and I think one in Park Ridge too and not too far from you. Not meaning to be so direct.

    No problem.

My son said these places have great bread:

Tony’s italian deli 6708 Northwest Highway Chicago

Nottoli Italian Foods – 5025 N. Harlem Ave.
      Chicago, IL 60656

Piatto Pronto – Andersonville on Clark Street

Bari Foods – 1120 West Grand Chicago

      Let me know

Not a big fan of Biden by any stretch; and I hate the idea of blaming the victim; but there is an awful lot of evidence (mainly from her) that her allegations are bs.

“Every allegation of sexual assault must be taken seriously, and the#metoo movement has certainly given the victims of sexual harassment and assault a greater shield of confidence in coming forward with less fear of being attacked themselves. With this said, however, it is the media’s responsibility to thoroughly investigate accusations before
jumping into a story and allowing those allegations to potentially destroy another human being, or, in this case, a political campaign.

Every woman deserves to be heard, but every media outlet still has the responsibility of investigating and then relaying to the public all of the facts at face value….

In 2017 Alexandra Tara Reade praised Joe Biden for his action in helping stop sexual assault, not just once, but on multiple occasions.

Between September of 2016 and May of 2017, Alexander Tara Reade used a Twitter account, under the name Tara McCabe, to spread praise of Joe Biden via tweeting, retweeting and liking various Tweets.

There are multiple examples of this, as seen below:

This means that between the time she claims to have been sexually assaulted by Biden, and the time that she publicly came forward with the allegations, she was spending time on Twitter commending her alleged perpetrator for helping end sexual assault among other things.”
