Has Brad Delong lost his mind? Or is he speaking in tongues, meaning something that the words don’t actually suggest? From the NY Times this AM on the hot topic of Head of the Fed: “A Slight Preference for Larry Summers.” Based on what attributes one begs to ask? Says Brad, “Larry Summers has an edge as the most creative thinker likely to successfully think outside the box should outside-the-box thinking be called for, and least likely to bind himself to an institutional consensus past its sell-by date.” Outside the box? Maybe outside a box of Capt. Crunch cereal, but what has Summers done in the past two decades that is indicative of anything other than a good old boy in the banking community? And he couldn’t even hold onto the job at Harvard given his spontaneous and outrageous comments regarding the value of women.

Really Brad, Summers isn’t outside of the box. He is deep into the corner of a box constructed of cardboard and filled with destructive ideas.

    just to remind those…

Summers is the guy who said Africa is “underpolluted” so we should be exporting our toxic waste to them.

    this is “outside the box.”

as for the women, i can’t say he undervalues them… probably he does… but what i heard him say was that they aren’t good at math. he was wrong about that (the truth may be closer to “almost no one is good at math, least of all those with ph.d’s who think playing games with symbols is “math”) which i guess makes it also outside the box. or would, if being wrong wasn’t the norm for “inside the beltw… er box.”

oh, but how is he at “economics”?

just fine if you mean “good for the banks.” not so good if you mean good for the economy… if you mean you and me.

It’s very entertaining to read the responses to DeLong’s support of Larry Summers on Brad’s own web site. Reading down from the top I haven’t yet found anyone who agrees woth DeLong, but this one is the best of all for comprehensiveness combined with concision.
    “Bloix said…
Summers is toxic. If Obama wants to drive down the number of women who vote and work for Democratic candidates in 2014, and thus hand the Senate to the Republicans, he’ll nominate Summers and force sitting Democratic Senators to vote for him. Then Obama can spend the last two years of his presidency being impeached while the rest of us see the destruction of whatever’s left of domestic social programs. There is virtually no way to overestimate the stupidity of this nomination.”

Barry O., If you or one of your surrogates maight be reading this blog site, there is still time and opportunity to rescue your legacy from total derision. You’re not doing all too well with the Democratic base that favors democratic and progressive government policies and actions. Nominate Yellen and put the bad dreams of the nation to rest in this small corner of policy decision making. Then have Holder prosecute James Clapper for perjury. Then at least you’ll score twice on the better side of human behavior.

FORBES HEADLINE: “How Much Would A Big Mac Cost If McDonald’s Workers Were Paid $15 Per Hour?”

ACCORDING TO THE ARTICLE: “… if McDonald’s workers were paid the $15 they’re demanding, the cost of a Big Mac would go up 68 cents, from its current price of $3.99 to $4.67.”

CHEER UP! THE REST OF THE WORLD FROM THE POOREST FAST WORKERS TO CONSERVATIVE HIGH FINANCIERS HAVE CAUGHT ON TO HOW TEENY-TINY OUR MINIMUM WAGE IS — EVEN IF ACADEMIC AND MEDIA PROGRESSIVES HAVE NOT QUITE CAUGHT UP THE TO HUGE DISPROPORTION.
