I am 60. I raised my daughter to go to college (and I funded it) to gain a skill and get a good job. Now I feel completely different about college for my grandsons. If you are seeking a license to do the work you want (like an M.D.) then college might be for you. Otherwise you are probably traing to be a wage/debt slave all your working life. I will suggest my grandsons get some OTJ training for plumbing, electrical, or the railroads (great jobs on the trains). Then I suggest they learn to invest/trade on their own to build their net worth for retirement.
Push for the UK system for medicine, which exists in a few medical schools in the us 6 years from HS to a medical degree, because the bachelors degree is eliminated. Makes a lot of sense, it appears that much of europe operates in this way as well.

Grandma:
Sad commentary you are making here.
1. Additional education may not cause open doors; but, it can prevent doors from being closed to you from a lack of it.
2. You do not have to go so much into debt where it can not be paid back or the payments leave nothing left for life.
3. There are 2 year colleges where the basics can be taken to alleviate much of the expense and then transfer.
4. Doctoring and lawyering is not for everyone.
5. Why deny the sons? Are there reasons why they would not be successful?
