    Rolling………………

Optimizing is what DoD contract developers do with $80B a year of R&D funding.  Their government handlers sometimes call it changing requirements too.

Is optimize got to do with minimizing cost or maximizing benefit?

This is the best.  Thank you for posting it.  I go back and forth on this.

the raw grab is unreal, and perhaps this is the defining moment.

nah.  always up for a good fight, as long as those on the pot calling the kettle black can stand a look in the mirror.

i have no problem with attempts at union busting.  just call it what it is.

this is nothing more than power politics at its best.  after obamacare, now the unions are going to pay a price.  something about karma as a balancing force in nature; or was hammurabi right afterall…

You can get good coverage of the protests with lots of pictures and videos here:

I recommend Ann’s site. It pretty well shows what the protestors are up to.

    as,

I have no problem with them excercising their rights.  Go for it – as long as your doing it on your own time and your own dime.

And of course being non-violent about it (and clean up the mess they make like the Tea Party did on the mall). Gov. Walker should be able to walk right through the crowds to his desk to sign the legislation without once worrying about being assaulted.

    Don’t you agree?

Two very good questions from the Tech guy:

“1. No matter why the signs say, this will not be the last election in Wisconsin’s history. Presumably in 2012 the members of the Wisconsin house and senate will be up for election again and the governor in 4 years. If the unions have the people behind them, isn’t it a given that in the next election the republicans will be swept out of office and collective bargaining will be restored? Are the unions fighting so hard because they understand the voters disagree with them?

    2. Under Walker’s plan the union would be re-certified each year by a vote of the members. Do the Unions believe that their members who are apparently so well served by the unions that they are turning out to protest in big numbers would choose not to re-certify?”

    Link: http://datechguy.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/two-questions-that-arent-being-asked-about-wisconsin/

So why is the Dems worrying so much? They should let Governor Walker hang himself then sweep back into power in a wave of popular sentiment. If this is that popular an issue to the people of Wisconsin the public unions will be fine. Heck they can even recall the governor and some of the state senators.  The Dems should be practically rejoicing over this huge misstep, right???

    Right?

Or is the real problem is they fear the answer to the above questions is Yes, the voters are not on the unions side?

    Buff

you are making some sense,  but you are overlooking two critical points

in a fight, people do not take the long view.

in a fight, if you give up ground, you may not get it back.  the unions frankly don’t give a damn about the “voters” because they know the voters are ignorant, stupid, selfish, and easily misled, if not miscounted.

moreover, if they don’t put up a fight, the voters won’t even know there was an issue.

  • coberly says:
    March 1, 2011 at 11:31 am

    besides

the “voters”  are in this situation  “the boss.”

and as General Sherman pointed out “you can’t change their minds but you can make them afraid of you.”

it took a hundred years for the unions to reach a point where they could protect the workers, as opposed to just getting their heads busted while the voters looked on and smiled.  i don’t think the people who understand this are just going to sit there quietly so as not to disturb Buff’s brunch and hope for the next election. it’s not as if the last one did them any good.

  • jeff in indy says:
    March 1, 2011 at 11:51 am

i remember the end-of-times rantings and the “we’ll get him unelected” threats from the public unions when mitch eliminated collective bargaining when he was first elected.  i believe he was not only re-elected (uh, that was in ’08), but the house recently went R and the senate picked up more, as well.  i’m just sayin’…

  • buffpilot says:
    March 1, 2011 at 2:17 pm

So coberly, you basically once again say the populance is stupid – or at least not enlightened like yourself.  And the unions think the people who provide the money for their pay check are “ignorant, stupid, selfish, and easily misled, if not miscounted.”

Wow, the elitism and hubris in those lines are beyond belief.

The voters can change everything at the next election if they wish. What your worried about is they won’t. Why would that be a bad result? Its a democracy around here. If you want to go build a leftist paradise there are plenty out there – Cuba, North Korea, China.  Go for it. The top tell all the unwashed ignorant, stupid, selfish, and easily misled where to live, how to think, what to eat (when there is any food at all). You would probably like it there.

And if you haven’t notice they are about to pass a similar bill in Ohio. Maybe the rustbelt is finally getting tired of rusting….

    Buff

you are getting a bit rabid.  it shows where you are coming from.

in the case of public employees “the voters” are “the boss.”  and like all bosses they are short sighted and greedy.  sometimes it takes a strike to get the boss’s attention.  the facts of life are that its very hard to get a strike if you haven’t already organized a union.

your recommendation that the union members just be nice and wait for the next election is a recommendation that they just cut off their own testicles and bake them into a pie for your dinner.

you think you are defending the American Way… but you are actually making the same argument that the Tories made against the American Revolution.  Undoubtedly that’s because you are comfortable with the status quo.

I don’t think you know what either “elitism” or “hubris” mean.

The Founders understood that “the people” are ignorant, stupid, selfish, and easily misled.”  That’s why they wrote a Constitution of checks and balances…  to prevent democracy from voting itself into tyranny.

  • buffpilot says:
    March 1, 2011 at 4:51 pm

    coberly,

I am defending the American way. Its called Democracy.  You on the other hand continue to feel that Americans are “ignorant, stupid, selfish, and easily misled, if not miscounted.”  Your words, not mine.

The unions can protest all they want. And when they pass the bill they can organize and vote the Rs and Walker out of office. That’s how it works. Except in your world, where if you don’t like what your fellow citizens decide, with their votes, you – the elite and oh so smarter than the unwashed masses –  will pat them on the head and overturn their wishes. That’s not democracy – its dictatorship – which you constantly advocate for.

The constitution works very well. Try to follow it and you will find it really does.  The people voted for the Rs and Walker. If they don’t like it, they can vote him out of office and let the next guy change things back.  That’s how Democracy works.

Would be nice if you would join us commoners and come down from your Kingly throne.

my words are damn close to the words of the Founders.  the fact that you know so little of history that you don’t recognize them does not excuse you from reading more carefully.

sure we have elections.  we also have protests.  that’s to help the electorate even hear about the problems. your suggestion that the workers just go home and shut up and wait until the ever wise electorate decides their fate is fatuous.

hey, we elected the guy.  now just spread your legs and take it until the next election cycle when the next lying bastard will promise you lower taxes and eat your children.

what you are doing, buff, is projecting your own bad conscience.  you sold your soul for security, and took orders for a living.  and dropped bombs on people who never heard of america much less conspired to hurt it.  so you accuse me of wanting to do the same thing.

you could read better if your head wasn’t so full of shame.

    coberly,

I have never said the protestors should go home or not protest. They are free to do so all they want. Go for it. As long as they are non-violent and do not interfere with the working of the government I have no problems with them.

I beleive in freedom – you don’t, and never seem to even give a nod toward it.  If by their protest they get the legislature and govenor to change the proposed law – good for them. If not, also good for them.  No one is impinging their freedom to assemble or speech. (Though the protestors are starting to get violent against people who disagree with them see Althouse’s blog above – thus taking away others ability to assemble and speek).

And they are more than welcome to organize and recall Walker if they can – he’s vunerable to that starting in Jan 2012.  Let’s see if they can actually do so and get their candidiate and laws they wish elected and enacted.  BUt if they fail – then the voters have spoken.

That’s how democracy works – not by bowing to the thug, which you seem to be all for. By your own words.

jeff – Obviously the world didn’t end and teh people liked the guy enough to re-elect (in a Dem year of ’08 no less).

Sounds like the voters made their wishes fairly clear. You get it I see.

    Cheers!
