Health Care thoughts: Privacy and Security

Health Care: Privacy and Security
Technology both enabled these offenses and enabled the discovery of the offenses.
First:
Three employees and a contract nurse were terminated from the Tuscon University Medical Center for looking at medical records of the Tuscon shooting victims. None are accused of leaking any information.
Second:
Darling daughter called me this week during the 11 o’clock news. Ohio Health had announced that patient data from Grant Hospital in Columbus had been compromised. She has been a patient there in the last six months.
An employee had stolen computers from the IT inventory, attempted to wipe the hard drives and then to sell the computers. Whatever data was lost was encrypted and the probability of a compromise is low, but Grant will be required to do the full court press on HIPAA security procedures (at no small cost).

Privacy is lost in this day and age. We may as well eat rabbit pellets rather than deny the Health Insurance Oligopoly access to our private info.
Until the great unwashed, the water carriers for the Republican shoutocracy, learn that they are shitting their own pants, we are helpless.
For instance, Paul Ryan from Wisconson, BA (in what ?) is setting the economic agenda for the United States of Higherly Educated. Well, I suggest that Paul Ryan from Wisconsin is absolutely not qualified to set any kind of economic agenda for Mayberry North Carolina, let alone the future of the Newnited States of America.
The Health care bidness is a monopoly, with all the microeconomic issues associated with a monopoly, and their is not one Kingfish in sight with the wherewithal to break this heaa monopoly. I am amazed that no one else realizes that Bill Frist, Humana, slipped us all the big chocalate cigar, as we nash our teeth and squirm while Paul Ryan, BA in something, decides the future of “entitlements” in the US.
In passing I note Joe Scarborough’s converstaion with the Pawlenty from Minnesota. He asked him how he could be bleating about deficits when the Republiscams extended the Bush tax cuts.
He said ” there can be no balanced budget without reductions in entitlements.” You must be able to not think beyond the end of your own Johnson to be able to puke such cacha with a straight face.
Whoa Nelly. True American patriots all.

My Mozilla browser is multi-posting. My apologies. This is from Internet Explorer … test.
Not to worry Sandi, we can take care of multi posts.
Hint. The JS-Kit commenting thing is fluky. Mostly it accepts your post but depending on browser and maybe Igor’s state of mood (just kidding Igor, he is a really good guy and JS-Kits troubleshooter) may not send it back to your browser session. Before reposting you might just want to launch a new Angry Bear session to see if it actually posted, or if not know that Dan, me or Ken and some others will be by to clean up. AFTER we get your input.
Believe me deleting multiple posts is the least of the problems of AB moderators.
Gotta work on my typing dyslexia……
Is this great, or what. Here I thought because I turned 72, I had sprung a leak & my marbles were disappering faster then the dreded S.T.M.L. that effects us old types. How refreshing it is to know that typo’s & double posting aren’t my fault all together. I glide into the weekend without my feet touching the ground. Wheeeee!
Tucson, please, not Tuscon. It should be in your spell checker.

The Social Security Administration suspends/demotes or terminates employees who access its data bases without express legal authority. SSA also routinely blocks access to the data/benefit records of famous public figures like famous politicians, entertainers, sports figures and the like. In order to request information from us about individuals receiving/applying for benefits, members of Congress and the Senate must have written authorization to do so.
Other federal agencies, not so much. But, SSA has had cases in which its employees have used our data bases to gather information for extorting, threatening, or stalking/assaulting beneficiaries or others. Pretty obviously, we can’t tolerate that conduct. So, it came as shock to me that you can buy blocks of SSN’s and credit card information from many websites and that financial institutions routinely sell personal information.
If you are afraid the government Knows and Sees All, well, BOA knows and sees All and More. So, don’t forget, all your business records are out there just waiting to make your bank or CC company a nice profit. Your medical records, traffic tickets, lawsuit participation–every record of importance to you in maintaining your privacy is readily available for a price. So, y’all, Big Brother wears an Armani suit and flies first class. Ain’t capitalism grand?
Sorry about the repeats. I’m not trying to be annoying. I pressed the Post button only once.

Bruce,
Just to add some more info on top of Sandi. The comment count regualrly does not match the number of actual comments shown. For example as of the timestamp the main page showed 14 comments but I could only see 6 on this post.
Also the entire page hanges up when I hit post at times using both Mozilla and IE. It freezes with th ecomment page visible, but not editable, for as little as 5-10 seconds to a couple of minutes. Eventually it gets through whatever is causing it and posts the page.
Obviously not as big a concern as my inability to spell…
Seriously the JS-Kit people are really responsive. And nice folks even as they didn’t initially seem to grasp the differences between policy blogs and social media. Igor (programmer/troubleshooter) really does want to hear from site-owners and commenters. Nothing Dan or I can do is going to help with these kind of platform performance issues.

And you are luckier than Bill. His multiple posts all went away leaving NOTHING behind. I’ll look into that one.
