“If he’s (Pres. Obama) such a student of history, has he not understood that, you know, that’s the one thing you don’t do is engage in a land war in Afghanistan? All right? Because everyone who’s tried, over a thousand years of history, has failed. And there are reasons for that. There are other ways to engage in Afghanistan.”
Michael Steele, Chairman RNC
“There is no intrinsic contradiction between providing additional fiscal stimulus today, while the unemployment rate is high and many factories and offices are underused, and imposing fiscal restraint several years from now, when output and employment will probably be close to their potential.”
Douglas Elmendorf, the director of the Congressional Budget Office.
Michael Steele said that? INCONCEIVABLE!
Ah well…a simple truth and a brave man.
Where was that brave man in 2002?
Hanging out with the deficit hawks in an undisclosed location is my first guess.
Cheers!

Well yeah…bravery is not the first adjective to come to mind, but a lot of people are yelling at him now. A lot of people yelled at me in 2002, but they were just friends. And it didn’t really make much of a dent in policy circles or the national psyche.
“If he’s (Pres. Obama) such a student of history…”
Maybe Steele was referring to George Bush, but not making himself clear as usual.
I guess Michael Steele has forgotten who started that land war in Afghanistan and failed utterly to end it at Tora Bora three months later.
Indeed he said the truth which of course is inconvient. If subduing Afghanistan is the only way to get victory in the war on terror because otherwise Al Queda will come back there, then its clear we need to invade Somalia, and possibly other failed states. Of course the neocons who thing we need to export our way of life to everyone object. But if Alexander the Great could not subdue the land and Hellinize it, nor the British, nor the Soviets what hubris to say we could do so.
