Noted for the Record

Ken Houghton | June 16, 2009 4:20 pm

105 years ago today, James Joyce lost his virginity.

Eventually, he wrote a very funny book about the day.

May all our days be as productive.

In 1969 only those who attended thought of Woodstock as a “cool” happening.  In reality Woodstock was a lousy sound system and a bunch of kids thinking that they were hippies, but in relaity were conforming to every cliche that the media of the time could dream up for the image of ’60s generation hip.  Think traffic jams, mud, small stage in a huge field and a couple of inadequate amps.  That was Woodstock.  Thank goodness it never happened again though it did usher in the stadium concert performance, the beginning of the era of too big a crowd and too little sound at too high a price.  Yippee for Woodstock.  Even Asner’s cows thought it  better not to attend.

Golden Gate Park?  Is that any where near Haight-Ashbury?  That was one weird scene.  Bunches of white kids acting the role of street urchins and/or miscreants.  A seriously bad drug scene and some fool singing about “goin’ to San Fransisco with flowers in his hair.”  I don’t know that “coolest” would have been the most precise description.   What was it that Timothy was professing and suggesting, “turn on, tune in, drop out?”  I never thought of the guy with his face buried in a brown paper bag as cool.
