Who’s next: Iran, or Syria?

Christopher Dickey of Newsweek makes the following interesting argument:

A COUNTDOWN has started for war between the United States and Iran. It’s quiet but persistent right now, like the ticking of a Swatch. Soon enough though, alarms will start ringing.

He builds a reasonably good argument. But all of the signs I’ve seen over the past weeks suggest to me that Syria, not Iran, will be the next target. Not least because Syria is militarily impotent, whereas Iran actually has a large, loyal, and determined military – and Bush needs easy military victories to be popular, not long, difficult, and bloody military victories.

On the other hand, maybe Bush can just let Israel take care of Syria by itself.
