Bernie Sanders performed magic with that speech. In a detailed, scripted and oft repeated piece of campaign rhetoric, he described what is wrong with our country.
Every single point he raised I agree with. No exceptions. Everyone knows the litany by now.
But the magic was how he made those issues totally disappear. He gave no method at all of changing anything, despite it being in his hands to work to do so. As he has done his entire career in politics, he just repeated his criticisms from the sidelines. And he made no attempt to move towards correcting all of our problems.
One of the most depressing speeches I have ever heard. He has done a spectacular job of bringing these problems to the forefront of American politics. But he could not bring himself to taking the step to actually doing something.
Local level is fine. But the answer is easy. Let me throw in what he should have said.
“To correct these problems we need Congress. I now have talked to 5, 10, 20(make your own number) who agree with me on these problems. We need these people in the next Congress. On my website you will find links to donate directly to these people who, like me, want to change this country.
Five dollars, ten dollars or twenty seven dollars, ti does not matter. We need your help. And I will also give my time to campaign for these people so that they can help me change this country to what is should be.”
Lot of work. But these things are not easy, and they are certainly no done by just talking.
