Gates Drops a Few Positions in the Rich People Tally
I read this stuff (yes stuff) and I wonder how you equate this to the average person going to work every day. I can’t. The average salary is far less for people going to work every day of the week. Reading about Bill Gates giving away $millions just does not register with people. Referencing this piece to an article on MSN today. Here is what Bill Gates is doing today.
Eighteen years the richest man in the world. Now the richest man is the 12th richest man in the world. He gave a ton of money to his sidekick Steve. Steve started off at $50,000 per year + a 10% bonus in 1980. In 1975 my beginning salary was $12,000.
In 1980, a salary between $25,000 and $35,000 was doing well. One could say $50,000 a year was rather better than average salary starting off. I was degreed and I did not get increases boosting me to such a salary as Ballmer made until a couple of job changes later.
“Billionaire Bill Gates was once crowned the richest man in the world for 18 years. Now his former right-hand man, Steve Ballmer has topped his wealth. Gates’ net worth plummeted $51 billion to reflect his philanthropic passing of funds to various entities. Steve Ballmer replaced Bill took as the fifth richest man in the world, Sadly Bill Gates slipped down to 12th place. And the Microsoft cofounder will only continue to slide down the ranking as he’s determined to not die rich.” As taken from MSN.
Bill Gates is determined not to die rich? According to Kiplinger a net worth of $11.6 million is considered to be rich. Being called rich also dependent upon where you live. On the West Coast ~$4 million gets you into the rich category. In the Midwest, it is less. Will Bill Gates disappear with less than $10 million, probably not.
Dream on . . .

Charlie Ergan went to my high school. He was a senior when I was a sophomore. I remember him on student council and on the varsity basketball team. He is the cofounder and chairman of satellite and internet service company EchoStar. Ergen first began selling satellite dishes out of the back of a truck in Colorado in 1980. In 1995, EchoStar went public and also launched its first satellite, birthing pay TV subsidiary Dish Network. Ergen spun off Dish into a separate company in 2008 and remerged the businesses in December 2023, again under the EchoStar name.
Today, he’s only worth $4 billion.
