Biden Derangement Syndrome continues
The Trump USDA is defending your right to die from Salmonella poisoning.
“The United States Department of Agriculture is withdrawing a rule proposed in August to help prevent food poisoning from poultry contaminated with salmonella.
“The Biden Administration effort, which had been in development for three years, would have required poultry companies to keep levels of salmonella bacteria under a certain threshold and test for the presence of six strains most associated with illness. If any of those strains were found or standard levels were exceeded, the poultry couldn’t be sold and would be subject to recall, the proposal had said.”
*snip*
“The USDA has estimated there are 125,000 salmonella infections from chicken and 43,000 from turkey each year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, salmonella causes 1.35 million infections a year, most through food, and about 420 deaths.”
Since the rule was proposed in the Biden Administration, it has to go.

Joel:
I am not a big fan of chicken. So, my intake of it is limited. The question?
Is the issue about undercooked chicken? Heat will eliminate the threat of Salmonella I believe. There is a litany of ways of cooking poultry properly resulting in a safe meal and eliminating the threat.
Is the cook at fault more so than the farmer corporation?
@Bill,
While cooking generally kills Salmonella, it remains a concern in poultry products due to the prevalence of Salmonella in raw chicken and the potential for cross-contamination during preparation and cooking. Thorough cooking to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) is crucial to eliminate Salmonella, but it’s also important to avoid re-contamination by using separate cutting boards and utensils for raw and cooked chicken, washing hands thoroughly, and properly storing raw poultry.
Joel:
Perhaps a bit more direct. One of your sentences said this:
“required poultry companies to keep levels of salmonella bacteria under a certain threshold and test for the presence of six strains most associated with illness.”
Live chickens can also have salmonella? Feed chickens antibiotics? Or they said apple cider works also.
What would a certain threshold be?
Just nosey . .
@Bill,
Salmonella is a gut bacterium. So yes, live chickens carry salmonella. Feeding livestock sub-therapeutic antibiotics has been used to bring them to market sooner, but it is believed to be a significant contributor to antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Don’t know what the threshold is.
@Bill –
As a general rule of thumb, it’s better to put safety-related quality into the product than force a lot of behaviors on a hundred million+ households – behaviors they may not be aware of. Hence, airbags, seat belts, anti-lock braking systems for cars; anti-virus software and firewalls built into operating systems; licensing requirements for doctors (although not for hairdressers!), and so forth.
John:
With a stretch, I can understand what you are saying in relation to the post topic. WE thrive to keep comments on topic.
Joel and I were talking Salmonella and cooking it out of the food which “may” have it. Joel points out cooking is not the only issue. Any surface the contaminated chicken may touch would also spread the bacteria. This would be true even if the chicken was declared as being safe. The average citizen can not determine such safety. So the practice could be to treat all chicken as being contaminated. Cook properly, wash surfaces, etc.
Anyway, welcome to Angry Bear. I have not read you before.
Danke Schoen! (Don’t know how to do the umlauts…) I only found you all recently through Calculated Risk. Looking forward to learning a lot!
John:
There is a way to do the umlaut on Windows 10 or 11. I just can not do it. Google it for some unclear direction. Some rules and info. for AB for you.
1. Be on topic to the post.
2. You do not have to be right and you may be told so by the author or another.
3. Be polite. You do not have to agree. Just be polite.
4. It is interesting to hear other opinions to the topic.
Bill McBribe wrote here at one time too. We do have other writers and doctorates who come by also. If you have questions, ask!
You do not have to agree with everything. Just be polite and know when to be silent. We try real hard to respect others.
I travel Germany quite a bit when I worked for German companies. They gave me a long leash and a car.:)
