Very good Le Show last week. Harry Shearer interviews Shoshana Zuboff author of “Surveillance Capitalism”. Listen here or download at your favorite podcast distributor… https://harryshearer.com/le-shows/june-02-2019/
On a related note, speaking personally I am observing my 6th month without a smart phone. I abandoned them in December and find myself appreciating the nostalgia of my new cheap ’90s era flip phone. It talks, and it (sort of) texts (forgot what a pain it was typing on numeric keypads). It stays in my pocket and when it’s temporarily misplaced it’s not a panic.
#1 appreciated feature: It’s virtually impossible to sell ads on it. It doesn’t support any “Free!” apps that steal information about me that is worth more than the “Free!” service provides.
Shearer’s guest and my own experience shows me the way forward: I’m going to be a lot more careful about being sold on “convenience”. It turns out that saving time is actually pretty expensive, depending on how you account for it.
