This article by Steve Randy Waldman at Interfluidity has been getting a lot of play around the Intertoobz since yesterday (I also linked to it in Comments on the previous Grexit post). It’s title is simple but it has a lot of depth and insight, I thoroughly recommend it. Greece
Show must go on… I just love this, Shake that EU, shake it.
“If necessary, we will issue parallel liquidity and California-style IOU’s, in an electronic form. We should have done it a week ago,” said Yanis Varoufakis, the finance minister.

Elite, US and other allies will risk, that EU will come down with the euro. Now it’s Greece, next time some other country… or they will give up for Syriza and left wing will get power in da EU. Pasok will rise next.
I ain’t believe, that Merkel and friends like democracy too much, so I hope that Varoufakis will have few aces in the sleeve, cause he sure will need those.
I can’t wait till next week and how stocks will go chute-the-chute all week long.
Greeks were not frightened by the very serious persons’ (working for the banks) scam that perpetual austerity was good. Seems Fox News style blither did not fly for 61%.
Why anyone thinks the EU is any better for Europe than what Napoleon and Hitler wanted is beyond imagining. Nor why anyone would think Germany is better for Europe now than in 1914 or 1940.
Next toss NATO!
It all seems so 1848.
I should also add that this is an excellent opportunity for the Russians. I’m not surprised that Greece hasn’t tried playing that card yet, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone.
Perhaps. But Greece is a NATO country and too much chumminess with Putin might give the Greek military some ideas about forestalling 1848 by returning to 1967.

Interesting thought. Military coups.
The possibility of radical shifts should have been considered when permanent depression was prescribed for Greece.
NATO is important to the pentagon’s 2.5 war strategy. It represents the excuse for 40% of the US “force structure”. Imaginary big war in Europa lustfully consumes 2% of US GDP every year.
All threats in the pentagon are myth.
While possible, the generals taking over Greece to keep their 3% of GDP in NATO rather than their 3% to ally with Moscow……
Athens is already talking energy transport for Russian NG.
Ilsm maybe you have some numbers, but I saw in passing a comment that Greece was one of the three biggest weapons importers in the world. Whether that is strictly true or not I wonder (and doubt) whether the Austerians of N.Europe have urged any such austerity on the Greek military. Or whether they are happy selling the German and French military exports into Greece even as they demand more pension cuts and an extended VAT on food and electricity.
There has been some discussion of Greek military spending. 3% is the figure I heard. Likely from the agitprop about Greeks being worthy of more flogging by Berlin.
NATO in 2013 said 2.3%!

High for EC, who have been using US which spends more than 2 times Greek levels.
