Poor areas of the Dominican Republic
This post is a follow-up to the article by Felix Santana Garcia, The People Lie Helpless. Here are some photos of areas where the poor live in the Dominican Republic. Granted the poverty there is a result of many years of poor economic guidance in terms of marginal social benefits and marginal social costs. Their economy has years of low labor share of income, scarce social safety net programs, high inequality and government corruption.
If you look close here in the streets near the river, you will see flooding through the houses.
I highly recomending the book “Why Nations Fail” because those pictures are where this naiton is heading based on the decisions we have been making the last 3 decades. I’m not saying all of the nation will look like this, but enough of the coast will as the storms keep happening. It is New Orleans and lower Manhattan. It is Detroit and parts rural parts of West Virginia. Won’t take long for North Carolina if they can’t change their legislature.
The difference between these pictures and pictures from the 50’s and 60’s when we were building major projects (remember the Walt Disney videos he presented on his show about the Fl project when it was first conceived?) is the difference of one decision in a line of decisions.
