Federal emergency Aid and no borrowing of funds for relief efforts
If these words translate to actions in the Congress on emergency aid, I believe it is a significant departure from past policies. And Virginia, Cantor’s home state, is predicted to be impacted. We will know soon enough if political capital is spent on this idea.
A spokesperson for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) said that if there is any damage caused by Hurricane Irene requiring federal disaster funding, the money would have to be balanced out by spending cuts elsewhere in government.
“We aren’t going to speculate on damage before it happens, period,” his spokesperson Laena Fallon told TalkingPointsMemo. “But, as you know, Eric has consistently said that additional funds for federal disaster relief ought to be offset with spending cuts.”

Think you mean ‘Aid’, not ‘aide’ (‘nursing aide’) in your headline.
Ideas to consider on this subject, from a Libertarian point of view.
A disaster funds should be budgeted at the Federal level – they do it at the state level for sure. Anything left over could just go against the debt.
Is anyone at AB going to get hit? Here in Texas we would PAY for Irene to come and dump…
Islam will change

One thing for sure is the spending cuts Cantor is talking about will not be cuts in the US tribute to Israel.
Plenty of off sets, and all those property insurance companies can “sell” paper to Bernanke.
Shutter 5 floors and 4 wings of the five sided puzzle palace, I am sure Cantor won’t miss the PAC money.
Then the pentagon’s $200B a year for “services” support to the wars can be terminated, especially the stuff in DC and NoVA.
Easy, audit the F-35 contracts and terminate them.
There are a few 10’s of billions spending per month in Iraq and Afghanistan offsets that could help, and then demobilize the F-22 wings which are grounded for design faults since 3 May.
Then pull the navy out of ponds we don’t have any threats from.
And tell France, Taiwan and Japan their “security” is no longer bankrupting the US middle class……………………..
Easy button.
marcy wheeler did a nice job on the earthquake that hit his district:
CantorQuake: Trembling at the Heart of GOP Claims We Don’t Need Government – Back in March, after the Japanese earthquake, Eric Cantor defended Republican plans to cut funding from the USGS and warning systems to help in case of a disaster. This is the epicenter of the freak 5.9 Richter earthquake that just hit Virginia. Here’s the location of the Anna 1 and 2 nuclear power plants, which lost power and are now operating on diesel backup generators. Power has now been restored. And here’s a partial map of Eric Cantor’s district.
Government spending is reserved for war profits, war PAC money and war jobs in districts everything else government does is not libertarian.
I’m shocked, shocked, to see a politician following what he promised.
ILSM should be embracing the Cantor plan. The biggest pot from which to draw emergency fund may be his own favorite Department.
Fixed, thank you.
I certainly am–the lawn is cleaner than it has been in months.
That implies that Rebecca is.
Dan C. is also likely.
If a disaster fund isn’t budgeted at a Federal level, what is FEMA for?
FEMA is for training troops for disater relief in the Navy.
$!5B aircraft carriers are for disaster relief where Connecticutt made helicopters are into TV ads for a “force for good.
Trillion bucks a year for the war profiteer.
YES!!!
A use for the trillion bucks a year?
Like in the Navy commercials on TV!
Bring the fleets: 5th (the newest one for the Saudi princes), 6th (the one covering the sea lanes for the Sicily campaign), 7th fleet (ready for two or three reenactments of Midway) and the Altantic (the one keep those U boats away from the troop ships going to save Churchill) aircraft carrier battle groups to the US east coast. The navy’s main mission is disaster relief.
The marines can bring in their 7 amphib ready groups with the too hard to fly and maintain Ospreys. But 600 rifles ain’t much help from $200B in war profits’ machines.
Abrams’ tanks could be fitted with dozer blades for a few hundred dozers at 3 gallons per mile and 3 million a copy.
And send the bill to wall st and Lockheed.
Oh wait can’t have all this no show for the B-52″s gotta have a filming opportunity for all services equally.
