He’s now calling for major world investments in alternative energies and a weaning form fossil fuels. Not just for political “lets stop helping those towel heads” reasons either. He is now convinced that A) Humans have made a significant contribution to our planets warming B) That contribution is significant enough to warrant extreme actions C) The extreme action is warranted because it CAN actually make a difference.
Gentlemen & Ms Nancy O, I have a question concerning some of the lines here, which when ever there seems to be charts, graphs, positive stats, seems to be followed by the lack of MSM, the talking heads, a few of the news print elit, to bring these results to the forefront of the national window. If the lessor people can flood the various outlets & Government entities to support their point, causing them to take notice, then why can’t all the individuals where & elsewhere do the same thing? It seems that it would be possible to raise the bar in favor to the realities, as a counter balance to the “chicken little’s the sky os falling”, rhetoric that is blasted on a daily basis. I realize that this is a simpletons question, but I do participate in quite a few of those E-mail, letter writing endevors, some of which do get noticed. I sure hope that someone isn’t going to reply that it’s too late, that if I’m not careful, a spook will come out of the shadows & I shall cease to exist, for dareing to askthis.
Mr. Norman–I send a lot of those emails too. And, various commenters and bloggers have formed groups to counter the Peterson and Koch gangs offensives. I suspect that these people will have some effect on the Deficit Commission’s welcome when it gets to Congress. But, bold as new conservative political hopefuls sound, I think their constituents would make it clear that they should just settle down and you know, cut taxes like they sposed to. And then, shut up. In any event, just as soon as the last vote is cast in November, it’s gonna be 2012. This is really just a warm-up bout. The race is not to the swift…Nil desperandum, sir. Nancy O.
Greg, actually Lomborg has always been a fence sitter. Few do not believe that man has had an impact on the climate. If you read Pielke’s article above, he says:
“A focus on CO2 as the dominate human climate forcing is also a flawed, incomplete scientific perspective. It can easily lead to policy decisions that are costly yet accomplish little if anything in terms of actual mitigation of the role of humans in the climate system. Policies focused on controlling the emissions of greenhouse gases must necessarily be supported by complementary policies focused on other first-order climate forcings.”
Which is pretty much where the policy arguments remain.
good luck with that. jimi has proved… to me… that sometimes he gets it right because his heart is in the right place. but then he reads some right wing crazy crap and he believes he has seen the truth.
his current comment doesnt’ mention military spending, but spending on education. and runs the usual mindless diatribe on “keynesianism.”
Norman, A response to adversity is never too late as the adversity seems never to desist. I think that the primary fault lies with the media which is not so much a public service that many of us wish that it were, but it operates as what it is, a business and big business at that. And big businesses support one another in a “good old boy” manner of speaking. I.E. the big media isn’t going to bring to public attention any truth that is an inconvenient one. Our political class is of no good assistance in the search for the truth as the only truth is that which serves only their purpose. As I have said here previously, it is as though the Fourth Estate has morphed into a Fifth Column. Whose interests does the press serve, that of the public in general or that of the financial elite? Unfortunately this has long been a concern in all “democratic” societies.
Wikipedia has an insightful quote from Oscar Wilde concerning the relationship between the press (the fourth estate) and the government. “It (the fourth estate) has eaten up the other three. The Lords Temporal say nothing, the Lords Spiritual have nothing to say, and the House of Commons has nothing to say and says it. We are dominated by Journalism.” I much prefer the view point of Robespierre (again, which I’ve noted here previously) when he addressed the issue of the public’s need to know. As quoted by Ruth Scurr in Fatal Purity: “When will the people be educated? When they have enough to eat, when the rich and the government stop bribing treacherouos pens and tongues to deceive them. When will this be? Never?” It would appear that young Maximillian was a bit of a pessimist, but subsequent history has, unfortunately, proved him only too right on the issue.
$288 Billion of the $787 Billion was the original maximum money that would b spent on Tax Cuts. Since the majority of the money is going to be spent as we move closer to the 2012 Election, and since the majority of the tax cuts were for 2009 and 2010…..did the $288 Billion get spent on tax cuts?…….I doubt it!
Funny, no mention that one of the foremost climate change denialists just changed his tune.

keep up the good work. i have despaired, but you need not. See Bruce’s post today on the fate of good news about Social Security.
Norman,

“Where would the US economy be w/o the non TARP, non tax cut stimulus?”
Does it matter? Most of the money has been payed back!
jimi
wha? who said they were your words?
I am confused…how is voting republican going to address this anger that Cadell describes? Not your endpoint Corev, but Cadel’s.
