Britain, the Security Council, and Global Warming

As reported in tocay’s New York Times, Britain, in a novel move, push global warming onto Security Council’s plate, claiming that because global warming has the potential for causing wars and because the purpose of the Security Council is prevent wars, if possible, that global warming is therefore within the purview of the Security Council.

The novel move was opposed for various reasons. While I would support Britain’s argument that global warming may well lead to wars, I am not sure exactly what I think about making the Security Council chew on it.

One thing is for sure: Britain’s move, even if it is denied, elevates the importance of global warming and brings to the fore another aspect of its dangerous consequences.
