Mitch McConnell, Healthcare, and the ACA
I am always curious about why certain people make it a mission to get rid of things. I think it truly is about Addison Mitchell McConnell trying to erase the accomplishments of what the first black President Barack Obama did as the president. I did some rather easy digging and pulled up Wikipedia. here is what they said about Mitch.
As a youth, Addison (Mitch) McConnell overcame polio. He received “government-provided healthcare” in Warm Springs saving him from being disabled for the rest of his life.” Addison Mitchell McConnell
Given that you Senator McConnell received government-provided healthcare during your youth which saved you from being disabled, why do you feel the need to strip 24 million people of their healthcare? This healthcare may save their lives also.
Paul Ryan benefited from government survivor benefits which allowed him to go to college.
They have a convenient memory which allows them to think they did it all on their own, and all the others are just moochers. Let’s face it, they did work hard, and they got “results” so they attribute other people’s failures to a lack of will. They never see their unique good luck in being born into the right family, the right community, meeting the right people, because they truly believe in their own total self-manufacture, springing full-formed from their own heads
Carol:
All valid points and I wish you would spread this around. We need to turn the heat up on Mitch McConnell
Republicans are all special snowflakes. They deserve all the goodies they get, and more, unlike everyone else.
As was famously observed about GHW Bush, he was born on third base and thought he’d hit a triple. Ann Richards, I think.
Then there’s the Salk vaccine which wasn’t available in time for McConnell — but whose developer would not allow patent rights which the Republicans so fanatically and madly support.
Unlike the lead researcher of the group that developed the cure for Hepatitis C who made half a billion dollars for himself — and whose group sold the cure, Sovaldi, to Gilead corporation which wants 300 billion for a cure for 3 million US sufferers — and who knows how many trillion dollars world wide. Republican heaven (hell comes later).
He received “government-provided healthcare” -and at the very same time the government provided his father with steady work!
JackD,
That was Billy Martin talking about George Steinbrenner.
I’ll be generous and attach myself to the conservative side of the argument for a moment, ignoring my strong belief that this is simply a hideous idea that will cut medical coverage for the poorest people in order to pay for tax cuts for the wealthiest people.
That being said, the pragmatic conservative argument is that medical costs are growing quickly and the United States cannot afford to expand its entitlement programs, which Obamacare surely did. The idea is to reduce debt by eliminating government provided services under the logic that eventually spending must be curtailed in order to protect the solvency of the United States long term – stop growing the deficit. The largest contributors to the federal budget are SS and Medicare costs, so these are the places they are looking to cut. The ACHA is just the first step in this process. Given the opportunity, they would cut SS also, but Obamacare is first on the chopping block b/c LIFO.
Again, this isn’t saying anything about the moral choice of cutting these programs, but please let me know if I am missing anything with regards to the logic of the argument. I am trying to better understand it myself.

So, you are going to use the argument(s) that even with a revenue source which covers any deficit SS creates, it is still a deficit because the Gov. either has to tax constituents to get the funds to pay back the loan from SS or print more money to pay it back. Portions of the ACA were passed under reconciliation which is not supposed to create a deficit and if it does like the 2001/3 tax breaks the bill is subject to sunset at 10 years.
Healthcare costs are increasing due to the healthcare industry and how healthcare is delivered. ACA is not the cause as conservatives and Repubs would have you believe. The AHCA just resets the clock back to 2010 as if the ACA never existed and uninsures 24 million people.
SM,

No, that is not the idea, that is their sleight of hand. there is no history of the GOP doing any of this, though there is an awful lot of examples of them saying this is their idea.
In terms of solvency, I would suggest you look at our interest payments/GDP. It is among the lowest in our history. Principal does not matter one iota to the US.
EM:
Need to move away from Medical Coverage being the cost driver in the first sentence. The issue was always healthcare costs and how healthcare was provided which will still exist even after the ACA is repealed.
Both side complain about the debt when they are not in power, and increase it when they are.
