We’re doing some math tutoring for a high school student taking an advanced math course at the local community college. The textbook was a Creative Commons download. We downloaded the PDF, and it seemed just as good as the $120 book used to teach the same course at the local high school. In fact, we preferred the CC textbook. It didn’t have as many sidebars and boxes and applications and distractions from the math itself.
The books is also available as print to order at lulu.com, one of the print and bind services for about $25-$30 plus shipping.
I’ve been looking at a number of CC textbooks in physics, math and biology, and I get the impression that we are going to see a lot more of them.
The text book costs are just insane and have been for years. When the cost of a textbook can be as much as a third of the amount you’re paying for tuition things are completely out of hand.
